Artist Of The Week: Nico Di Mattia

His interest in arts, comic books, animation and narration, and his passion for drawing and colors compelled him to enter the Cinema and TV school at Cordoba`s National University.

His first Speed Painting was in 2001 where he painted the poster from the movie Planet of The Apes on his bedroom wall and recorded the process on VHS. In 2007 Di Mattia moved on to the big stage by opening his own Speed Paining Channel on YouTube. He now has thousands of subscribers and his videos have been watched over 55 Million times.

Contemporary Classicism Painting by Kinuko Y Craft

Kinuko Craft is a Renaissance woman. By this I mean not that she paints like the Renaissance painters, but that she is an artist for all seasons, for all kinds of subjects, and in all kinds of styles. Her narrative art has included paintings for the book covers of many well known fantasy authors, opera posters, fairy tale books, and covers for many national magazines.

Ms. Craft is a graduate, BFA 1962, of The Kanazawa Municipal College of Fine and Industrial Art (known in Japan as The Kanazawa Bidai). She was born in Japan and came to the United States in the early sixties where she continued studies in design and illustration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for a year and a half. Subsequently, she worked for several years in well known Chicago art studios. Since the mid 1990’s, she has concentrated on children’s picture books, fantasy book jackets and poster designs.

The artist choose drawing over painting as this allows him to create many layers over layers of lines and dots which react to each other in order to create a vibrant texture with directions and movement. This approach enables the finished work to be viewed more by the “senses” as opposed to the standard visual observation of a photo.

For Dirk Dzimirsky the practice of drawing is view as “reminiscent of scratching on a surface to observe what’s hidden underneath, where as the nature of painting projects more the inverse, covering and hiding details and forms that might have contributed to a sensuality of a work”.

Tim Roosen has been an active member of the art world since 1997, and has participated in various group exhibitions, in Belgium, Holland, France, Luxemburg, Germany, Italy, Denmark, the UK and the USA, as well as a number of solo and duo shows. His works are in private collections in Belgium, Luxemburg, Holland, Germany, Denmark and the USA.

Inspired by an overdose of Sci-Fi movies in his youth, tons of fantasy literature and more weird dreams than he cares for, these creatures have a definate dark, warrior-like feel. Metal, a cold and lifeless material, is cut, hammered, shaped and welded into organic, living creatures of dreams and nightmares.

Won Park is also called the “money folder”, and is a practitioner of origami and use like canvas the United States Dollar Bill. The results are really special, not necessary because of folding (amazing one), as the way the pattern and images from dollar bill are used in model creation. Take a look at the koy fish for instance, and look how the swirl are used on eyes, or on butterfly, to see how the dollar bill numbers are used for balance. That make the origami diagram to go beyond the blank paper folding.

Last year we brought to your attention the pencil art of Paul Lung. Now, this article showcase few works of Armin Mersmann, recognized as one of the top 100 pencil artists in the United States.

Artist Statement: “My work has become increasingly narrative. Symbolism, both collective and personal, is prevalent in my work as it deals with the evidence of humankind’s existence through artifacts. I am reacting to man’s preoccupation with cheating death and his creating representative objects, tokens and icons in an attempt to achieve this immortality. I am intrigued, amazed and frightened at the process of nature’s power to reclaim, and am dealing with my own mortality. There have been my main concepts of late. Although the “story” within the work is very important for me as a vehicle for pent-up emotions and impressions, I do not feel that it’s necessary that the viewer understand verbatim what I am portraying. It is, however important that the viewers’ own imagination gets activated, where my imagery and their exclusive translation bring a brand new meaning to the work, unique in that moment of time. These works are not meant to be illustrative, where all the information is laid out, but vague with a hint of surreal. I firmly believe the success of my work can only be attained through the unexpected nexus of thought and feeling between artist and viewer; this then becomes the ultimate artistic collaboration.”
